Their Tuya-enabled app serves as a centralized platform for users to control and manage a wide range of smart home devices from various manufacturers that operate on the Tuya ecosystem. With features like remote management, voice control via Google Home, and easy sharing of devices among family members, the Tuya Smart app provides users with an effortless and convenient smart home experience.
The Challenge
Tuya sought out Home APIs in order to solve two points of user friction. First, Tuya wanted to allow Google Home users to control Google Home devices from key categories (including lights, outlets, and switches) directly from the Tuya app, without the need to switch between platforms. Previously, if a user wanted to control devices from third-party manufacturers supported by Google Home but not Tuya, they would need to switch from the Tuya app to open their Google Home app or use voice commands.
Second, Tuya wanted to create a streamlined onboarding process to commission Matter devices to Google Home, to provide flexibility to users while onboarding devices.
What Tuya Did
To enhance the smart home experience for their global user base, Tuya strategically partnered with Google to leverage the Google Home APIs. Recognizing the significant portion of their overseas users who utilize Google Home, Tuya focused on creating a more integrated and user-friendly ecosystem..
A key action Tuya undertook was to update their Android app to utilize the Google Home APIs. This allowed them to achieve several important improvements in functionality:
Enabled Control of Google Devices within the Tuya App: Tuya's use of the Home APIs in their latest app release empowered users to directly control their Google smart home devices (including lights, outlets, and switches), from within the Tuya app. These devices could be controlled utilizing both cloud and Matter control paths.
Streamlined Matter Device Commissioning: Home APIs added the capability for users to seamlessly commission their Matter devices to Google Home directly through the Tuya app. This aimed to simplify the onboarding process for users adopting the new interoperability standard. Moreover, once added to Google Home, these devices can become available to any app that uses the Home APIs.
Device Status and Control across Apps: By integrating with the Home APIs, Tuya enabled users to control their devices on both the Google Home app and the Tuya Smart app, with the device status updated in real-time. This ensured a consistent and responsive user experience across platforms.
